Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has urged governments at all levels to prioritize more investments in education and human capital development.
He also said that more attention is needed to be paid to infrastructural development in the country.
A press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu on Sunday stated that Kalu’s call was contained in his keynote address at the 5th IG Leadership Excellence Awards 2023 held Saturday night in Abuja.
Speaking on the topic “Excellence in Leadership: The Nigerian Context”, Kalu as the Key Note Speaker, represented at the event by the lawmaker representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chris Nkwonta, highlighted other key aspects of excellence in leadership, noting that public service under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is receiving excellence.
The Deputy Speaker, who was also honored with the ‘Best Legislator of the Year’ Award at the event, said, “investing in education and human capital development is vital for the long-term growth and progress of Nigeria. Leaders should prioritize quality education and skills training to equip the Nigerian workforce with the necessary tools to compete in the global economy. Nigeria has a large population of young people who hold the potential to drive innovation, economic growth, and social progress. By equipping them with the necessary skills and opportunities, we can create a generation of leaders who will continue to uphold excellence in leadership.
“Adequate infrastructure is essential for economic growth and social development. Leaders should prioritize infrastructure projects that improve transportation, power supply, healthcare facilities, and access to clean water, among other critical areas.
“Maintaining peace and security is crucial for Nigeria’s stability and prosperity. Leaders should prioritize effective governance and security measures to address issues such as terrorism, insurgency, and communal conflicts.
“As we embark on the task of transforming, reconstructing, and developing our society, the importance of excellent leadership cannot be overstated; in fact, it becomes even more critical.
“However, let me be clear: the emphasis on leadership should not absolve individuals or members of organizations from their responsibility to uphold excellence. We are all leaders in our own right. Whether in small or large endeavors, the excellence with which we perform our tasks sets an example and inspires those around us.
“Our public service, for instance, plays a pivotal role. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government of Nigeria is actively championing excellence in public service. The same commitment is required from leaders in the private sector. We must adhere to the best global practices in governance and business performance.
“While we take pride in our achievements and our standing in the international community, the challenge is to ensure that this excellence permeates every organization and activity in our national life.
“This task necessitates leaders in all sectors to establish concrete and specific standards of excellence. Every individual should understand how to achieve and measure this excellence. Leaders themselves must embody and demonstrate excellence, becoming the living embodiment of the values we hold dear”.
