As part of measures to further protect Nigerian consumers, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, is to establish Complain Desks in all the seven hundred and seventy four Local Governments in the country
The Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Dr Adamu Abdullahi made this known on Daybreak, a Kapital FM Morning Show in Abuja.
He said the Commission had already put in place necessary measures towards informing and empowering consumers towards getting value for their money.
Dr. Abdullahi who spoke on the topic “Protecting the Rights of Nigerian Consumers in Commemoration of World Consumer Rights Day” explained that FCCPC is also putting in place interim regulations towards protecting Nigerians from Digital Money Lenders.
“We’re currently in a very diasy situation especially with the issue of food prices nowadays and the fact that money is not easy to come by therefore it is very essential that people should know that there’s protecter of their rights and whenever they feel shortchanged, they should feel free to contact the FCCPC for appropriate redress and we’re assuring them of that ” He stated
In his words”We have been above board and we have carve a nitch for ourselves and whenever we have an upsurge of complains, we feel happy
because it means that people have confidence in what we’re doing through timely and appropriate redress over the years but we believe that there’s still a long way to go and we’re making necessary efforts towards addressing challenges confronting consumers in the country “
According to the Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, the Commission is strengthening its market inspection and collaborating with necessary Agencies towards protecting Consumers from unwholesome products and services in the country.
“If you have any issue, log your complains to us through our websites and physically through our Headquarters in Abuja or Zonal Office in Osogbo for the South West, Awka for the South East, Port Harcourt for the South South, Minna for the North Central, Katsina for the North West and Bauchi for the North East as well as our office in Lagos and Kano” Dr Abdullahi stressed.
On Digital Money Lenders, the Executive Vice Chairman explained that FCCPC has put in place interim regulations and also collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and other relevant Government’s Agencies towards protecting Nigerian consumers from their activities.
“As you can see we’re investigating Digital Money Lenders, DMLs although it’s not really our field because it’s CBN that should have that space but what has been happening is that consumers are being abused by cajoling them to take loan” He said
While advising manufacturers and service providers to desist from sharp practices, Dr Adamu Abdullahi stressed the need for Nigerians to always seek redress through FCCPC for proper resolution of their complains
He reiterated the commitment of the Commission towards safeguarding Consumer rights and called for the support of all stakeholders towards realizing the objectives of FCCPC.
