The National Troupe of Nigeria(NTN), under the leadership of the Artistic Director/CEO, Kaltume Bulama Gana, fsna, made a powerful debut in Kano City on Monday, June 3rd, 2024, using the power of community theatre to uplift spirits. Partnering with Moving Images Limited, the NTN staged the dance drama “Akwai Mafita” (Keeping Hope Alive) at the Kano State Government House’s Coronation Hall, captivating a distinguished audience that included top government officials, VIPs, and other guests.
The Governor of Kano State himself showed strong support by sending his Chief of Staff as a representative. Kano’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, instrumental in securing the venue and state government involvement, was also present, underscoring the importance of the event.
“Akwai Mafita” is more than just a performance; it’s a call to action. The play serves as a powerful tool to raise awareness within communities about the Nigerian government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. Through dramatic storytelling, it aims to reignite optimism even amidst the current challenges Nigerians face.
The use of drama in advocacy is not new. Plays have a unique ability to connect with audiences on an emotional level, fostering empathy and understanding of complex issues. “Akwai Mafita” exemplifies this perfectly. By showcasing the struggles and triumphs of characters facing adversity, the play inspires viewers to find strength and work towards a brighter future. This emotional connection is crucial for effective advocacy, as it motivates individuals to act and support the “Renewed Hope” agenda.
The choice to stage the play in Kano highlights the vital role of community engagement in driving change. By bringing the performance directly to the people, the National Troupe fosters a sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility. The presence of government officials further emphasizes the importance of collaboration between government and citizens in building a better Nigeria.
“Akwai Mafita” serves as a powerful reminder that hope is essential, even in the face of difficulties. The play encourages Nigerians to hold onto optimism and use it as a driving force to overcome challenges. This message is particularly important in today’s Nigeria, where citizens grapple with various social and economic issues. By keeping hope alive, Nigerians can empower themselves and work together to create a more positive future for the nation.
The National Troupe’s performance in Kano is a significant step towards achieving this goal. Through the power of drama and community engagement, “Akwai Mafita” has ignited a spark of hope, reminding Nigerians that a brighter future is possible with collective action and unwavering optimism.
The National Troupe has over the years engaged communities through various performing art forms and theatre projects to address issues and offer solutions to challenging situations, through national tours and community theatre engagements. The current efforts will also be replicated in other parts of the country in coming months.
