This ensures that agencies continue to enjoy the competitive advantages they’ve always had while allowing us to serve individual customers effectively,” he added.
The Lagos Annex: A gateway to greater opportunities
The decision to establish a presence in Lagos is strategic and forward-thinking. Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling economic hub, is not just a city; it’s a gateway to Africa and the world. - Flyzone Tourism Broadens Horizons: Targeting New Sectors in Lagos Expansion
Flyzone Tourism, a leading force in the Nigerian tourism industry is redefining its role with an ambitious expansion into Lagos. Speaking at a press conference held at the company’s Lagos office on Allen, Ikeja, Ambassador. Awomoyi Ayodeji, the Principal Executive of Flyzone Tourism and multiple-award-winning promoter of Nigerian and African tourism explained the company’s vision. The move to Lagos is not about competing with or overshadowing travel agencies but rather about targeting a new sector to expand the company’s scope and deliver even greater value to the Nigerian travel ecosystem.
Flyzone Tourism has long been a trusted partner for travel agencies across the country, processing thousands of eVisas and travel products for over 4,900 agencies. For over a decade, the company has specialised in creating innovative marketing campaigns for destinations ranging from bustling cities to serene beach resorts and breathtaking national parks, both locally and internationally. This expansion into Lagos is yet another bold step in Flyzone’s journey, fueled by a passion for excellence and a desire to bring new opportunities to the table.
Amb. Ayodeji highlighted the company’s unique approach during the press conference, emphasising that Flyzone is not entering Lagos to disrupt the travel agency market but to complement it by exploring untapped opportunities. “We are targeting a different sector,” he said. “Nigeria is a vast market with over 200 million people. Even with thousands of travel agencies, there is still room for growth and diversification. Our goal is not to compete but to expand, innovate, and provide value to all stakeholders in the industry.”
Reflecting on the evolution of the travel industry in Nigeria, he noted how the advent of Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) revolutionised the way people book flights and travel products. In the early 1990s and 2000s, Nigerians relied heavily on traditional travel agencies for bookings. However, the rise of OTAs allowed clients to book directly online, bypassing intermediaries. This shift, while significant, did not render traditional travel agencies obsolete. Instead, it underscored their value as problem-solvers and trusted advisors in an increasingly digital world.
“Even today, the role of a travel agent remains crucial. When a client faces issues, it’s often easier to reach out to the travel agent who booked the ticket than to contact an airline, which has its hands full with other operational responsibilities. Travel agencies also benefit from exclusive discounts, creating a win-win situation for everyone. For instance, if we offer a product to a client for 100,000 Naira and a travel agency gets it for 50,000 Naira, the agency still retains its competitive edge. This synergy is vital, and we intend to preserve it while targeting a different segment,” he noted.
The decision to establish a presence in Lagos did not come easy. The award winning
Ayodeji explained that Flyzone’s Port Harcourt office has been very efficient and served primarily as a back-end operation focused on processing requests and managing travel agency partnerships. The new Lagos office represents a shift toward more direct engagement with the market, enabling Flyzone to foster closer relationships with clients and partners.
“Port Harcourt allowed us to concentrate on back-end operations, but Lagos offers something different, which is a chance to engage directly with the industry and its stakeholders. In Port Harcourt, we rarely had visitors to our office because everything was handled online. While this model worked well, we realised over time that we were losing opportunities to connect with travel agencies face-to-face. Lagos changes that. It brings us closer to the action and allows us to build stronger relationships,” he said.
While addressing concerns on whether Flyzone Tourism expansion into Lagos might create competition with existing travel agencies, he reassured that the company focus remains on collaboration and innovation, not competition. “We are not here to take jobs from travel agencies. We are here to target other sectors and broaden the scope of what’s possible in Nigerian tourism. Our relationships with travel agencies are built on trust, and we are committed to maintaining that trust as we explore new opportunities,” he stressed.
The Lagos office also places Flyzone in closer proximity to critical visa centres and other travel-related infrastructure. This strategic location enhances the company’s ability to serve both travel agencies and individual clients more efficiently. “For example, the UK visa application centre was initially based in Port Harcourt but had since relocated, though South Africa and Angola visa application centres are still there in Port Harcourt. Being in Lagos allows us to respond quickly to changes like these and remain accessible to our partners and clients,” he explained.
As Flyzone ventures into this new chapter, the company’s commitment to excellence remains unwavering. With a proven track record of success, numerous industry awards, and a reputation for delivering exceptional service, Flyzone is poised to redefine what it means to be a leader in the Nigerian travel industry. The move to Lagos represents not just an expansion but a reaffirmation of Flyzone’s mission to drive the industry forward through innovation, collaboration, and a customer-centric approach.
Flyzone Tourism presence in Lagos also underscores its dedication to bridging the gap between traditional and modern travel services. While the online community continues to grow, he acknowledged that many Nigerians still value face-to-face interactions. “People’s past experiences shape their preferences. Some still feel more comfortable visiting an office or meeting someone in person before entrusting their travel plans to them. By establishing a physical presence in Lagos, we are meeting people where they are and offering them the best of both world such as online convenience and personal connection,” he added.
Making a call to action for travel agencies and potential clients alike, Flyzone Tourism boss urged tourism stakeholders to explore what the company has to offer and assured them of the company’s unwavering commitment to excellence. “We are here to make a difference. Whether you are a travel agency looking for a reliable partner or an individual seeking top-notch travel services, Flyzone is here for you. Together, we can create unforgettable journeys and open new doors for Nigerian tourism,” he assured.
Flyzone Tourism’s Lagos annex is more than just an office. By targeting new sectors and expanding its business scope, Flyzone is positioning itself as a true innovator in the industry, ready to meet the evolving needs of Nigeria’s dynamic travel market. As the company continues to grow, one thing is clear: Flyzone Tourism is not just keeping pace with the industry, undoubtedly setting the standard
- How Online Travel Agencies transform Nigeria’s travel industry
The emergence of Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) has reshaped the Nigerian travel industry, creating new opportunities and addressing the limitations of traditional travel agencies. According to founder Flyzone Tourism, Mr. Awomoyi Ayodeji OTAs have encouraged the travel business to expand its reach, improve its efficiency and adapt to a rapidly changing market. Speaking at Flyzone Tourism’s Lagos office, located at Allen Avenue, Ikeja in Lagos, Mr. Ayodeji pointed out the transformative impact of OTAs and the symbiotic relationship they share with traditional travel agencies.
“In the past, Nigerians didn’t have direct access to book their flights online. This was especially true in the 1990s and early 2000s. It wasn’t until recently that OTAs began to emerge, allowing clients to go online and book their tickets themselves,” he explained. Mr. Ayodeji noted that the rise of OTAs came as a response to the limited reach of many travel agencies. Traditional agencies were unable to capture a significant share of the growing market, prompting companies like Flyzone Tourism and other Destination Management Companies (DMCs) to adopt an online-first approach. This shift, he said, not only brought the convenience of direct booking to clients but also provided travel agencies with an opportunity to expand their network and offer better services.
He pointed out that airlines have also embraced digital transformation by offering clients the ability to book flights directly on their websites. However, this doesn’t mean the traditional travel agency model has become obsolete. “The role of a travel agent remains critical,” he said. “If a client encounters a problem, it’s often easier to call the travel agent who booked the ticket than to contact an airline, which is already handling a vast number of operational tasks. Travel agencies also have established relationships with OTAs and DMCs, making it easier to resolve issues and secure special discounts for their clients.”
He provided an example to illustrate this collaboration: “If we offer a product to a client for 100,000 Naira, a travel agency might get it from us for 50,000 Naira. This creates a win-win situation. The client gets the product at a competitive price, while the travel agency retains its profitability. With a population of over 200 million people, Nigeria is a vast market, and no single entity can serve everyone. Collaboration is essential for success.”
Flyzone Tourism boss, also shared insights into the Nigerian travel agency landscape. “There are currently around 8,000 travel agencies in the country, including both registered and unregistered ones. This number encompasses mobile agents without offices, market traders who assist their colleagues with bookings, and others. The market is incredibly diverse, and OTAs are not targeting the clients of traditional travel agencies. Instead, they are tapping into a different sector altogether.”
Reflecting on Flyzone Tourism’s operational model, Mr. Ayodeji explained the strategic reasons behind the company’s recent move to Lagos. “Our office in Port Harcourt served primarily as a back-end operation. It allowed our staff to focus without distractions, processing requests and managing relationships with travel agencies. However, we realised over time that being physically distant from our partners led to missed opportunities for face-to-face interactions. Many Nigerians still prefer in-person engagement due to past experiences. This understanding drove our decision to open an office in Lagos.”
He acknowledged the importance of both online and offline interactions in today’s travel industry. “Even though the online community is vast, many Nigerians still value the reassurance of dealing with someone they can meet in person. That’s why Lagos is the perfect location for us. It brings us closer to the travel agencies, making it easier to build trust and strengthen our relationships. At the same time, our online-first approach ensures that we can efficiently serve partners and clients who may never visit our office.”
Flyzone Tourism has processed thousands of eVisas and travel products for over 4,900 travel agencies across Nigeria, earning a reputation for exceptional service and reliability. Mr. Ayodeji stressed that the company’s commitment to supporting travel agencies remains unwavering. “Most of the agencies we work with have never seen us physically, yet we have delivered consistently for them. The move to Lagos will allow us to enhance these relationships while exploring new opportunities.”
He also highlighted the strategic advantages of operating in Lagos. “Lagos offers proximity to key visa centres and travel-related infrastructure. For example, while Port Harcourt previously hosted the United Kingdom centre and this service has now relocated. Being in Lagos enables us to respond quickly to such changes and remain accessible to our partners and clients.”
With over a decade of experience in the tourism industry, Flyzone Tourism has become a leader in outbound travel, specialising in marketing campaigns for diverse destinations, from major cities to beach resorts and national parks. The company’s innovative approach and dedication to excellence have earned numerous awards and accolades. He attributed this success to the collaborative efforts of the entire Flyzone team and the support of the travel agencies they work with.
“The emergence of OTAs has not diminished the role of travel agencies; instead, it has enhanced their ability to reach a wider audience and deliver better value. By working together, OTAs, DMCs, and traditional travel agencies can create a more dynamic and inclusive travel industry in Nigeria,” he concluded.
Flyzone Tourism’s expansion into Lagos represents not just a physical relocation but a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and customer satisfaction. As the travel industry continues to evolve, Flyzone Tourism stands ready to lead the way, bridging the gap between traditional and modern travel services and ensuring a brighter future for Nigerian tourism.
- Embassy proximity, B2C expansion: Key drivers to Flyzone Tourism’s Lagos office
Flyzone Tourism’s recent establishment of its Lagos office is a strategic move aimed at leveraging the proximity to key embassies and expanding into the business-toconsumer (B2C) market. Speaking during an interactive session at their visa centre located at Allen Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos, the Principal Executive of Flyzone Tourism, Mr. Awomoyi Ayodeji, explained how this decision aligns with the company’s vision to enhance service delivery and broaden its market reach.
For years, Flyzone Tourism has been a cornerstone in Nigeria’s tourism industry, processing thousands of eVisas and travel products for over 4,900 travel agencies. With a proven track record in delivering exceptional service and collaborating with tour operators, airlines, and agencies, the company has established itself as a leader in outbound travel. However, operational challenges in Port Harcourt, including limited access to embassies, necessitated the move to Lagos.
“Lagos gives us the proximity we need to key embassies that are critical for our operations. In Port Harcourt, we relied solely on visa collection centres for countries like South Africa and Angola, nevertheless the United Kingdom visa application has left
Port Harcourt and most embassies are in Lagos or Abuja. This meant frequent travel to Lagos, which not only increased costs but also impacted efficiency. With the Lagos office, we can now handle embassy-related processes faster and more effectively,” Mr. Ayodeji said.
He recalled a recent experience where the team had to lodge in Lekki for an extended period to process submissions for the China Trade Fair. “With another submission coming up in March, having our office here means we won’t need to go through that again. It’s a major relief and ensures better resource management,” he added.
Beyond the logistic advantages, the Lagos office also marks Flyzone Tourism’s deliberate pivot towards the B2C market. Traditionally focused on serving travel agencies, the company now aims to tap into the broader consumer market, offering direct services to individual travellers. Mr. Ayodeji noted that this move does not undermine the role of travel agencies but rather complements it.
“The B2C market is an untapped segment with immense potential. While we have always prioritised our relationships with travel agencies, we believe there is room to cater directly to consumers who are increasingly seeking personalised and seamless travel experiences. This expansion allows us to diversify our offerings while maintaining our commitment to our agency partners,” he said.
Mr. Ayodeji stressed that the Lagos office will act as a hub for both B2B and B2C operations, ensuring a balanced approach to meeting the needs of diverse clients. The strategic location not only brings the company closer to embassies but also places it at the heart of Nigeria’s bustling commercial capital, providing greater visibility and access to a larger market.
With over a decade of experience, Flyzone Tourism has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt and innovate. The company specialises in creating marketing campaigns for a wide range of destinations, from iconic national parks to serene beach resorts. Its commitment to excellence and innovative approaches has earned numerous awards, solidifying its reputation as a trusted name in outbound travel.
“Our expansion into Lagos is not just about convenience; it’s about setting the stage for the future. We are positioning ourselves to serve a broader audience while continuing to deliver the quality service that has defined our brand,” he added.
Flyzone Tourism’s Lagos office represents a significant milestone in its journey to redefine travel services in Nigeria. By combining the logistical advantages of embassy proximity with a focus on B2C expansion, the company is poised to lead the way in creating seamless, customer-centric travel experiences.
The Principal Executive of Flyzone Tourism, Mr. Awomoyi Ayodeji, is a multiple awardwinning tourism practitioner whose expertise and innovative approaches have earned him recognition as a leading figure in the travel and tourism industry. With a career spanning over a decade, he has demonstrated a profound commitment to advancing the sector, specialising in promoting diverse destinations and creating bespoke travel solutions for clients across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.
