As various political parties in Nigeria conclude it’s Presidential primary elections ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has commend all registered political parties for a successful convention and election of their presidential flagbearers.
While commending the parties for a transparent process in the conduct of their primaries, NAWOJ calls on all political parties on the need to be gender sensitive in the entire process in order to achieve political equation and balancing as this has become imperative in sustaining our democracy.
In a statement signed and made available to Journalists by the President of the Association,Comrade Ladi Bala, she maintained that, the Association appeals to the political parties to consider picking a woman as a running mate for the office of the president and governors of the respective states.
She stressed that it’s worrisome to note that rumours making the rounds are suggestive of male candidates being considered for the office of vice president by political parties as this does not only negate the contribution of women to nation building but, also endangers an inclusive governance in Nigeria where all demography clearly indicate the need for a equal opportunity for females to serve at the highest level.
NAWOJ says the time has come for the promotion of gender equality in political leadership in Nigeria to be accorded the center stage particularly as the country head towards the 2023 General Elections to help reposition the country and properly situate it in its pride of place and position as the giant of Africa not only in size but in capacity too.
NAWOJ equally calls on journalists and media organisations in the country to rise to the occasion of setting agenda for a more inclusive governance in Nigeria through objective reporting that does not negate the tenets of the profession.
