Democracy Day: SDP National Chairman Gabam Urges Leaders to Deliver on Security, Jobs, Justice

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has called on Nigerian leaders at all levels to raise to the expectations of the people by delivering on key national priorities such as security, unemployment, and poverty reduction, as the country marks this year’s Democracy Day.

In a Democracy Day message made available to news men press on Wednesday, Gabam described June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, urged both citizens and leaders to reflect deeply on the sacrifices of democratic heroes like the late Chief MKO Abiola, whose struggle, he said, remains a symbol of justice, fairness, and national unity.

According to him, “Today, June 12th, we celebrate Democracy Day, a significant milestone in our nation’s history,” Gabam stated. “As we commemorate this day, we reflect on the sacrifices made by late MKO Abiola and other heroes who fought for our democracy. Their legacy reminds us of the importance of upholding the principles of justice, equality, and fairness.”

The SDP National chairman stressed that the true essence of democracy lies in the protection of all citizens’ rights, especially the vulnerable and marginalized. He urged Nigerians to reject political divisions based on religion, ethnicity, or culture and to embrace voting patterns anchored on credibility and competence.

According to him, “Our democracy is only meaningful when we protect the rights of all citizens, particularly the vulnerable and marginalized. We must ensure that our voting patterns are driven by credibility, not regional, religious, or cultural biases,” he said.

Alhaji Gabam charged political office holders to use their positions to bring meaningful change to the lives of ordinary Nigerians, saying the time had come for leaders to justify the trust reposed in them.

According to him, “We call on our leaders at all levels to prioritize the expectations of Nigerians. The citizens have entrusted you with power, and it’s time to deliver. We urge you to focus on pressing issues like security, unemployment, and poverty reduction. These are the challenges that affect the daily lives of Nigerians, and it’s time for tangible solutions,” he noted.

While congratulating Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, Alhaji Gabam urged continued dedication to democratic ideals and a collective resolve to build a more peaceful, just, and prosperous country for future generations.

“May we continue to uphold the principles of democracy and work towards a brighter future for ourselves and future generations. Let us honor the sacrifices of our heroes by building a nation that is just, peaceful, and prosperous for all,” he added.

To the country’s leadership, he sent a firm message: “Stand firm in defending the principles of democracy. Uphold the rights of citizens, and ensure that justice and equality prevail. We expect nothing but the best from you, and we will hold you accountable for your actions.”

While reaffirming his Party’s commitment to democratic growth, Alhaji Gabam called on all Nigerians to unite in the spirit of nation-building, reminding them that democracy is a continuous journey that must be guided by the values of sacrifice, accountability, and justice.

“Let us work together to build a nation that is worthy of their sacrifice. Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria! May we continue to grow and prosper as a nation.” he stated
