The Natiional Executive Council, NEC , of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and its Board of Trustees, BOT, at the weekend lauded President Muhammadu Buihari, the Natiional Assembly, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF and other Stakeholders for their continued support for a virile local government system administration in the country under the political dispensation through the electoral process as against the practices of the adoption of the Caretaker Committee.
This was contained in a statement made available to news men in Abuja by the Natiional President of the Association, Hon Kolade Alabi David
According to the statement, ” under the new dispensation so far, it is on good records that recent experiences in the three Tier have shown that local governments/Councils are becoming more viable instruments of grassroots political change through election legitimacy.
” Such has broadening local participation and service delivery and need to be unhindered just like in States and Federal where gaps or makeshift were not contemplated
“We appreciate the efforts of states Governor’s despite the paucity of funds by ensuring that council elections are being conducted rather appointing Caretaker Committees our LGAs and Council Areas
“The year 2020 has been very commendable with some remarkable elections especially in some states like Borno, and Bauchi where elections were not conducted for over a decade.
“ALGON specifically wish to thank the Governor’s Forum as well as Governor’s currently running the LG/Councils through elected officials and commend the recent entry of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kogi Abia as well as those that have maintained unbroken electoral system like Lagos, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Niger, Kaduna, Ekiti and so on where some of them even had their elections recently”.
ALGON however urged some State Governors still running their respective states with interim Committees to have a rethink and conduct proper Local elections without further delay
According to the statement, “ALGON is happy that Nigerians can now see the difference from available scorecard across states where local elections are practiced with the kind of grassroots inclusion and numerous dividends
“The 3rd Tier of Government is truly the closest to the citizens and should be encouraged to building a stronger reputation for service delivery through democratically elected officials
“It is with keen interest that ALGON is also anticipating the fulfilment of many other Governor’s like Kano, Ogun with elections coming up soon to join the democratically elected local government/Council system’ .
