The Chairman Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change Senator Mohammad Hassan Nasiha has decried underutilization of gas fire plant caused by lack of uninterrupted gas supply.
The chairman who also a member of Senate Committee on Up Stream Petroleum Sector who stated this while delivering a key note address at the Oversight Function of the Senate Committee on Up Stream Petroleum Sector held at Lagos, said Nigeria has significant demand for gas to boost power sector.
In a release signed by Lekan Olawoyin, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity for Senator Hassan Nasiha noted that Nigeria has a potential domestic demand from commercial, residential and industrial sectors.
Nigeria has significant domestic demand for gas mainly from the power sector even as the country plans to become an export hub in Africa by exporting not only to regional countries but also to the other Asian countries like India and China.
The gas fired power plants in the country are consistently underutilized due to lack of uninterrupted gas supply. The country also has a potential domestic demand from commercial, residential and industrial sectors.
On the way forward for the sector, Senator Nasiha stated that by building the country-wide gas distribution network, the Nigeria government will achieve far much more in petroleum sector
He commended the effort of the government in making the sector to be reckoned with globally
