The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has congratulated Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State on his reelection for a second term.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Monday declared Governor Diri, candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), winner of the governorship election conducted in Bayelsa on Saturday.
INEC had conducted staggered governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa States on Saturday, with the ruling APC winning in Imo and Kogi.
Speaker Abbas attributed Governor Diri’s victory at the poll to the democratic disposition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has shown courage in allowing free, fair and credible elections under his leadership.
The Speaker noted that successive administrations of the APC since 2015 have strengthened the electoral process, allowing various opposition parties to get into power, especially in the National Assembly.
Speaker Abbas cited the example of the 10th House, which has seven opposition party members.
He urged the political parties and candidates who are dissatisfied with the outcome of the election to seek redress at the election petitions tribunal.
Speaker Abbas urged the winners across party lines to support President Tinubu in delivering dividends of democracy to Nigerians, as planned in the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the administration.
