In a bid to further guide against elder abuse, the Federal Government has promised to step up its efforts in protecting and safeguarding the rights of older persons in the country.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy Ohaneye made the promise in Abuja during a road walk and sensitization campaign organized by the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons In Nigeria, COSROPIN to mark this year’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Mrs Ohaneye who was represented by a Director in the Ministry, Mrs Gloria Micheal commended COSROPIN for always championing the advocacy in promoting the wellbeing of older persons in the country.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Spotlight on Older Person in Emergencies” the President of COSROPIN, Senator Dr Eze Ajoku, OFR called for the inclusion of older persons in every National Action Programmes.
“We seek the inclusion of Older Persons in every National Action Programmes such as Health Insurance, Social Investment, Economic Empowerment and Income Generation of Local, State or Federal Governments because Older Persons have the right to express their wishes and references regarding health and long term care -related decisions and to have those expressions respected” He stated.
In his words “Older Persons have the right to social protection, including income, security without discrimination based on age or gender because not all Older Persons, Retirees and Elderly Small – Holder Farmers can access financial support services, except few who are financially bouyant “.
“As we reflect on the theme “Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies” it is incumbent upon us to address challenges comprehensively: we must advocate for inclusive emergency preparedness and response plans that prioritize the unique needs of older persons and this includes accessible evacuation routes, medical care tailored to their requirements and communication strategies that reach those who may be isolated and we must strengthen community networks and support systems that ensure older adults are not forgotten/neglected during emergencies ” Senator Ajoku explained.
In his goodwill messages, the Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority , NTA, Salihu Abdulhamid Denbos promised to support COSROPIN in defending, protecting and safeguarding the welfare of older persons in the country
The Director General of NTA who was represented by Mr Adamu Sambo called for more awareness Campaigns again elder abuse in the society.
Some older persons who spoke at the event stressed the need for more policies and programmes that would promote the welfare and wellbeing of the elderly.
Goodwill messages were also presented from the Representatives of the Directors General of NOA, Legal Aid Council, the Commandant General of NSCDC, COSROPIN Partners among others .
